Interesting Weekend

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

This weekend was really random. I had a friend who needed me to road manage for him while he and his wife went to Guatemala on a mission trip. I had never actually been a road manager but it turned out to be a lot of fun. The comedian and I, Brad Stine, flew to Baltimore and did a radio interview then a show and flew back on Saturday morning. Check out Brad’s website, he has some really funny material.

Christian Radio

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Did you know that the songs that many Christian radio stations play are governed by the collective opinion of an emailed based focus group? I was really surprised when I found that out. Everyone knows that most Christian radio stations play the same songs over and over. I’m really baffled by this fact. There has never been a greater supply of easily accessible Christian music yet there is never anything new on the radio. When I say “new” I am referring to songs that are unique rather than compressed into cookie cutter oblivion. What is the deal? It’s not that the music on the radio is bad….but it is all exactly the same. Sorry that this post is a big fat rant but I’m a little frustrated. What are the chances that the Creator of creativity made every person unique but made all their creative expressions in worship the same? I’m going with a big fat zero percent. It seems like radio stations, like the record labels, are trying to continue business like the independent artist isn’t about to take over the industry. It’s like an 8 track company that knows about the coming CD technology but decides to ignore it in hopes that it will be able to continue business as normal. You would think that these radio stations would hire some young people and try to be a part of the changing industry rather than ignoring it. I’m frustrated because a lot of the music that isn’t getting any air time is the very music that is destined to actually change people and the world. Worshipers are writing music that is clearly marked for revolution, but I wonder if the radio stations will ever catch up.
